This updated, internet only version of the VisualDx clinical decision support software system includes three new modules - Acute Pulmonary Infections (API) and two neonate and infant dermatology modules - for a total of eighteen components in the system..

The challenges of emerging and re-emerging infectious disease, including the threat of pandemic influenza, require that doctors distinguish between rare diagnoses, the common flu, and the infectious complications of influenza such as secondary bacterial pneumonia. The VisualDx Acute Pulmonary Infections module, created during the past year by a team of radiologists and infectious disease experts, is the only point-of-care clinical information system for the comprehensive differential diagnosis of Avian Influenza H5N1 as well as the diagnosis, treatment and management of over 40 other non-cardiac, lower respiratory infections. The module integrates more than 350 x-rays, CT scans and other images with a database of expert medical knowledge to assist doctors in rapid and accurate diagnosis of patients with acute respiratory symptoms. Once cardiac causes of respiratory distress have been ruled out, physicians enter basic observations about their patient into the VisualDx system, such as the patient's radiological findings, distribution in the lungs, symptoms, signs, travel, medical history, and other clinical findings. The software then displays radiographs of the possible diseases side-by-side, sorted by relevance to the patient. The doctor can then drill down to see further images of each condition and to read what the experts say about each disease.

Current VisualDx clients, including key state and metropolitan public health departments such as the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, Washington DC, Los Angeles County, Pennsylvania Department of Health, and Mississippi Department of Health, have been automatically updated to the 4.1 version.

In addition to the API module, two new neonate and infant dermatology modules have been added to the VisualDx system to support the analysis of rashes, growths and lesions in newborns and infants. Together, these modules include more than 2,000 medical photographs of over 200 diseases to help physicians diagnose and treat infants with common and serious dermatologic, genetic, infectious and inflammatory conditions.
